Lorna Buchan becomes City of Rockingham mayor

Lorna Buchan has been elected as the new mayor of Rockingham.

Over 26,000 people voted in the local government election with Ms Buchan beating three other candidates for the position.

"I am deeply honoured and humbled by the trust you've placed in me," she said on her social media page.

"This result shows our community has voted for positive change and new leadership that listens, works collaboratively and is focused on the future of our City.

"And whether you voted for me or not, I want you to know that I will be a Mayor that works for all of Rockingham."

Ms Buchan takes the reigns from the City's first popularly elected mayor Deb Hamblin.

"Firstly, a warm thank you to Deb Hamblin, Rockingham’s first popularly elected Mayor and the first woman to be elected to the role," she said.

"Deb has dedicated 20 years of service on Council. This is an extraordinary contribution that deserves recognition and respect."

In the Baldivis ward, Dylan Mbano was elected for the first time.

Robert Schmidt retained his position as Comet Bay ward councillor, while David Rudman was elected for a two year term to replace Ms Buchan.

In the Rockingham/Safety Bay ward, both Dawn Jecks and Leigh Liley retained their councillor positions, while Ryan Robertson joins council for the first time.
